Is Your Water Bottle Making You Fat?
It doesn’t seem to make much sense, how can your water bottle make you fat?
Water is good for you, right? Right!
But you may need to be more careful about your water container.
First a little background, in 2007 Dr. Bruce Blumberg, a cellular biologist from the University Of California, Irvine discovered an additive in paint was making some animals fat. You know how horses like to chew on wood fences. The additive is tributyltin, used to inhibit fungus growth on many common surfaces.
This lead to Dr. Blumberg’s finding of several more chemicals that seem to cause weight gain, he named these chemicals obesogens.
What Does An Obesogen Do?
An obesogen changes your metabolic set points, increases fat storage and may even interfere with your ability to control your appetite. There are several obesogens but one of the more prevalent ones is Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical used in the manufacturing of most plastics and resins.
Other Obesogen Sourses
Nicotine appears to be an obesogen, but not for the smoker. There is a strong association between childhood obesity and maternal smoking.
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a chemical used to make non-stick pans, and is an obesogen. It make be healthier to go back to uncoated pans and a little more elbow grease to clean up after meals. You’ll burn more calories, too.
Some pesticides are obesogens. While some are short lived, meaning they don’t stay around long enough to do much damage, others are what scientists call Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS), meaning they stay in your system long enough to cause long term weight problems.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) may also be obesogens. SSRI’s are found in many common anti-depressants.
Staying Free Of Obesogens
Staying free of obesogens is no easy task, at the moment they are pretty much all around us. You can find BPA in vinyl goods, toys, baby bottles, caned goods and many other every day products. Including water bottles, both the prepackaged variety and the refillable ones.
The good new is you can find BPA free water bottles, just do a bit of research to find where you can get one.
Stay Healthy,
Michael Cole
